courtlargeCalifornia State University Northridge will no longer be home to a Chapter of the Phi Kappa Phi Fraternity.  The Zeta Mu Chapter of Phi Kappa Phi is currently part of a criminal investigation following the recent death of a pledge and has complied with University requests to disband.

A group of students pledging the fraternity were required to take a mountain hike during the high heat of a July day as part of the initiation process.  According to reports, the group ran out of water before the hike was through and many of the students returned dehydrated.  One student reportedly succumbed to the heat and passed away as a result of the events that occurred during what is currently being investigated as hazing.

Hazing has certainly become a hot button topic over the course of the last few years – and for good reason.  This practice, which often includes things like forced binge drinking and the inflicting of physical and verbal abuse, has resulted in a multitude of injuries and more than a few deaths at large and small colleges across the US.  The increased incidents of injury have put Fraternity and Sorority practices under a microscope and law enforcement agencies and prosecutors have shown no hesitation to get involved when a serious injury or death occurs as a result of hazing.

School, on any level from elementary through all levels of higher education, should be a place that is safe and secure.  Students who want to expand their horizons by joining an athletic team, club or other extracurricular organization should be able to do so without the fear of embarrassment, harassment or physical abuse occurring.  If you have suffered an injury as a result of the abuse or neglect of an individual or an organization you should reach out to an experienced legal professional immediately.  A California attorney will be able to listen to the details of your story, determine if litigation is your best course of action and provide guidance toward the best possible resolution.
