mechanicCalifornia state lawmakers are calling for new penalties for companies that don’t pay workers. Since 2010, California courts have identified $273,952,366.15 in stolen wages in California. However, workers have to get an attorney and file a lawsuit to collect those stolen wages.

The state lawmakers are getting involved as a proposed law is being looked at to make those companies who haven’t paid their workers to post a $ 150,000 bond to remain in business in the Golden State. Since 2010, the labor board has found in favor of wage theft plaintiffs in the amount of a sum of over $ 80 million. However these court ordered payments are rarely enforced. A study conducted by UCLA has found that as many as 83 percent of the companies found guilty of not paying workers what they earned actually make good on the payments the courts have told them to make.

NBC Bay area reporters have asked the Labor Commissioner’s office how many they know have been paid but the office replied they have no way of tracking these figures at this time.  A workers’ only chance at receiving these back wages is often to take the employer to civil court.

Anyone who has been victimized by such an employer must make their voice be heard. The state may have found the employer in violation of proper payment for services rendered but a civil suit started by a California Employment Attorney will get the employer’s attention more so than the labor commissioner’s office seemingly can.
