lacityhallOn May 19, 2015, the Los Angeles, California City Council voted 14-to-1 for drafting a mandate expanding minimum wages for workers in Los Angeles from $9 to $15 every hour by 2020. Under the measure, the lowest pay permitted by law would increase to $10.50/hour for employers of more than 25 employees by July 2016, steadily expanding every year until it comes to $15 every hour in 2020.

The majority of workers in Los Angeles earn less than $15 every hour.  Approximately 800,000 workers will likely be affected by the new law. the new ordinance will only cover employees in the city of Los Angeles. Other incorporated cities, such as West Hollywood, Beverly Hills, Santa Monica, Pasadena, Culver City, and others, will not be included. In addition to the mandatory minimum wage increases, the new law also will impose additional penalties on employers that fail to meet the new minimum wage requirements.

California’s wage and hour laws are some of the most complicated in the nation. Every day, employers face lawsuits by employees for failing to properly comply with all wage and hour laws, as well as the industrial wage orders issued by the Department of Labor.
